Objective
Improve the livelihood of Sugarcane farmers by enhancing the productivity of sugarcane cultivation
Project implementing areas: Varipathanchena, Hingurana, Deegawapiya, Neeththa and Galmaduwa (Ampara District)
Period: 3 years
Target beneficiaries: 4,000 Sugarcane growers
Total project cost: Rs. 2122.9 million
Investment per beneficiary: Rs. 530,740

Project activities and benefits
• Arrange affordable credit facility (Rs. 233,915) at 6.5% interest rate and a grant facility, worth of Rs. 78,225 and to make the farmers bankable
• Provide multifunctional machine for ground work
• Provide technical trainings, exposure visits, and extension support
• Introduce intercropping at least 70% of the sugarcane land of each as an additional income source
• Create good access to sugarcane fields by renovating interior field roads
• Provide crop protection from wild boar by establishing solar powered electric fencing system
• Introduction of more strengthen crop insurance with shared contribution from beneficiaries and promoter
• Provide better irrigation facility by renovating canals and drainage as well as construct culverts and anicuts
• Establish and strength sugarcane farmer societies
• Train the beneficiaries on basic financial literacy and household budget management
• Educate beneficiaries on impact of climate change, resilience with adaptation of mitigation measures, nutrition, solid waste management, and gender
Youth empowerment
Develop 20 youth entrepreneurships to engage in support services (land preparation, transportation) for sugarcane cultivation by providing a credit facilitity (Rs. 2 million) at a 6.5% interest rate
