Today is the 20th anniversary of #WorldMilkDay
Although fresh milk is considered as one of the most popular beverages in the world, the level of milk consumption in Sri Lanka is considerably low at 110 ml per capita/month.
Sri Lankans roughly spend around 10% of their monthly expenditure on food items for milk related products. In Sri Lanka, milk powder is still the preferred mode of consumption although there’s an increasing trend towards fresh milk consumption as in many other countries. Currently, the country spends over 50 Bn LKR per annum for milk powder importation.
There are many initiatives to promote local dairy industry funded by Government as well as NGOs to make the country self sufficient in milk by year 2025 and we as SAPP is in forefront of such interventions by establishing partnerships with almost all leading private sector dairy companies under our signature 4P model. There are over 6000 beneficiaries under these partnerships actively working to reach the country goal of self sufficiency in milk with the support of project and our partners.
Let’s raise a glass🥛for the real heroes in the dairy industry in Sri Lanka 🇱🇰
